Boycott of the Oscars

January 21, 2016

I have a lot of sympathy for the many African-American actors who feel that the Oscars do not reflect the diversity of America arts; Samuel L. Jackson’s performance in The Hateful Eight deserved a nomination at least. But is a boycott of the ceremony the best way to express their frustration? Their actions may result in positive discrimination and an African-American winner in 2017 will feel politics rather than talent was the primary deciding factor in their achievement. Equally, a nominated white actor may miss out even if his/her performance was miles better than the other nominees.

The boycott risks creating more problems than the one it is attempting to solve.
